We seek to publish the very best new fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and literary essays by established and emerging writers. All manuscripts are given full consideration. We suggest you familiarize yourself first with The Southern Review before you submit.

FOR OUR SUBMITTABLE TRIAL PERIOD, ONLY SUBMISSIONS OF NONFICTION AND TRANSLATIONS OF PROSE WILL BE ACCEPTED. The trial period is from 6/1/2019-7/1/2019.

Only previously unpublished work will be considered. Please read the following submission guidelines carefully.

Nonfiction

We accept nonfiction submissions online only.  Please note that there is a $3 service charge for online submissions.

For nonfiction, please submit only one essay or uncategorizable. We rarely publish work that is longer than 8,000 words, though we will consider it.

Please wait until you've heard from us regarding a submission before submitting additional work, and submit no more than twice per submissions period.

Translation

We accept submissions of translations in all genres, but for our trial period, only translations of prose will be accepted. Please note that there is a $3 service charge for online submissions. This service charge will be waived during the month of September in celebration of National Translation Month. Mail submissions (no charge) should be sent, with SASE, to the address above, genre noted.

Please submit only one translated story, essay, or uncategorizable at a time. We request that each translation is accompanied by a statement indicating that the English translation rights are available as well as a copy of the original text. We do not consider excerpts.

Please wait until you've heard from us regarding a submission before submitting additional work, and submit no more than twice per submissions period.

Payment

The Southern Review pays $50 for the first printed page and $25 for each subsequent printed page with a maximum payment of $200, plus two copies of the issue in which the work appears, and a one-year subscription to The Southern Review.

Our usual response time is within eight weeks.

The Southern Review acquires first English language serial rights. All rights revert to the author upon publication.

Translators must have identified the rights holder and confirmed that the English-language rights are available before submission. Whenever possible, please include a copy of the original text after the translation.

We rarely publish work that is longer than 8,000 words.
